22 Military Road
Canterbury
A view along Military Road, looking west towards the Cathedral. 1885.
Kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. Also showing sign of "Royal
Dragoon" far end left row of houses. At the time this photograph was taken, the
pub was a tied house within the
estate of Alfred Beer's Original Brewery, which was located just around the
corner from the "Royal Dragoon," on Broad Street. The site is now occupied by
the Magistrates' Court. |

A view along Military Road, at its corner with Artillery Street. Until a
few years prior to this photograph being taken, the corner property
hosted the Rose and Crown, which closed c.1903. The soldiers (possibly
cavalrymen) in the foreground are practising "Swedish Drill" which had
been adopted by the British Army as part of its physical training
regime. Kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. |
A
similar view of Military Road, photographed c.1952, shows the former pub
by then trading as a shop. Within a few short years, almost all these
Victorian properties would be bulldozed by the City Council and replaced
with more up-to-date housing stock. |

The pub has been traced from between 1858 and 1903 so far and according
to the photo above, used to possess an area for skittles.
The premises it was said was on the corner of Artillery Street where the
Skittle Ground sign can be see.
Above image from Google, March 2009, shows Artillery Street on the left,
so this is the area where the pub once stood. |

Fatat Accident.
An inquest was held on the body of Richard Winchester, at the "Rose and
Crown" public house, Military-road, before Mr. Delasaux, coroner for
this district, on Saturday morning last. The deceased met with his death
under the following circumstances:—
He was proceeding from Herne Bay, where he had been living at the "Pier
Hotel," as waiter, to Canterbury, on the top of a van, on
Thursday
evening, and when passing through Sturry, he fell off the vehicle on to
the road; he was picked up and conveyed to his home in Canterbury, where
medical assistance was promptly rendered. The next morning early he was
found dead in his bed. The foregoing facts having been given in
evidence, the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death." The
unfortunate deceased has left a wife and four children totally
unprovided for.
