According to David G Collyer, the writers David Croft and Jimmy Perry used to drink in the pub, so he says a landlord told him.

David Chamberlain tell me that the "Star and Garter" was classed as a Hotel and Restaurant and had a public bar and another for the residents.

JOIN THE CLUB.

Deal Chess Club is quietly celebrating its 100th anniversary. It was formed in 1890 when a small group of enthusiasts met at The Star and Garter Hotel.

In 1990 the club meets at the Prince Albert public house in Alfred Square every Monday at 7.15 pm.

The secretary is Ken Stringer and he says the club is always pleased to greet new members. "We are especially pleased to see young people coming along. Absolute beginners will be given every assistance and encouragement".

I have found reference to the Deal Folk Club meeting at the "Star and Garter Hotel" on Friday April 4th, 2003.

The Deal History Society give the address as West Side of Deal and at the top of Chapel Street, and the date from between 1864 and 2005. Certainly looking long closed in 2010.

The pub was an outlet of Bushell, Watkins & Smith from Westerham till 1965 when that brewery ceased brewing but I am also informed it has also been an Ind Coop house, and latterly as the sign below shows from 1992, an outlet of Shepherd Neame.
