Still bowling along after all this time!
The Bowling Green Tavern - with its Canterbury Ales sign as it once
was and as it is now. Above photo circa 1905.
DEAL was once a town where there was a pub or inn on most streets.
Sadly, many have closed down or been converted into homes to accommodate
the town's growing population.
But some have survived and flourished, even in today's economic
climate.
The Bowling Green Tavern, in Bowling Green Lane is one of these and
it continues to act as a watering hole for many residents living in the
Middle Deal area.
Popular with families for the child-friendly garden during summer
months, the outside of the pub is usually festooned with hanging baskets
and flowers when the weather is warm.
The appearance of the building was much the same when Mercury
photographer Dave Downey visited recently as it was when the black and
white picture was taken.
A side porch and extension at the back which houses the pub's
restaurant are additions of recent years, expanding the residential pub
to allow for the growing trade from people eating out with the whole
family.
From the old image, supplied by historian and author Gregory
Holyoake, it appears the small brick wall and hedge has remained and
been extended to cover more of the area where railings once stood.

According to a list of former pubs of Deal and Walmer held at Deal
library, this public house was originally called the "Gun Inn." If so, that
must have been before 1847 as I have traced this establishment back to that
date when Richard Verrier was in charge of this beer house under the name of
"Bowling Green Tavern".
1872 this public house was being supplied by A Kingsford brewery in
Buckland.
1903 it was being supplied by George Beer brewers of Canterbury.

DOUBLE FAREWELL FUN FOR PUB OWNER EUNICE
"Bowling Green Tavern" owner Eunice Bourne has thanked her staff and
customers for their support in the past 12 years before bidding them
adieu.
Mrs Bourne, who lives in Kingsdown, will leave the pub, in Deal's
Bowling Green Lane, on March 25, having taken it on in 2002.
She has seen and implemented many changes, including improving the
kitchen and opening up more of the always popular garden.
She said: "It's a family orientated pub. I hope the new owner will
keep it like that."
Mrs Bourne ran the "Eagle Tavern," near Deal railway station, with
her husband Vincent, who died in 1999.
She then went to the "Yacht Club" in Dover and when she was offered
the Bowling Green, she took it.
In her time she has made many friends and enjoyed serving up food to
thousands of hungry diners.
She is having two parties to mark her leaving. The first on Saturday,
features Deal folk sensation Gentlemen of Few and the second on Friday,
March 21 will see Brad Pittance and the Pirates performing.
The party starts at 7pm and the music begins at 8pm. All friends are
welcome. |
Information in December 2015 tells me the pub is closed and its leasehold
is up for sale for £25,000.
Rumour has it that it is going to open again on 19th February 2016. As of
May 2018 the pub owners changed from Punch Taverns to Patron Capital. Latest
info (June 2018) is that the pub is currently closed under refurbishment and
will reopen again in August.
Latest news from Steve Glover in November 2018 says the building
currently has scaffolding on it and looks like it is soon to open.
