Did you see man hurt in the pub?

POLICE in Deal are appealing for information after a man mysteriously injured his head in a pub.

Officers are unclear how the 22-year-old who was in The Strand sustained the injuries.

The incident happened on Saturday, April 12 between 11pm and midnight.

Police would like to hear from customers who were in the pub at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Stephen Kerr on 01304 240055.

Originally titled the "Dolphin," then changed name to the "Black Horse." September 1998 it again change to the name we see today, the "Strand."

The CAMRA branch meeting of Novemeber 2008 stated that the pub was due to reopen after refurbishment. Latest information, this pub has unfortunately closed (2009) and has applied for a change of use to shops and residential.

Site History

The original structure of the Strand Public House formerly know as the "Black Horse" Hotel comprised of an reversed 'L' shaped premises facing west and fronting High Street the arrangement of the facade being much as would have been originally seen. This part of the building was constructed sometime in the late 1700's early 1800's however much of the fenestration is probably later. The majority of this building is of three storey construction however at the rear on the east side of the bottom part of the 'L' is formed an out-shot which encloses the stairs and mezzanine floors again fanning a three storey structure. The original function of these mezzanine rooms is unclear but latterly they formed bathrooms.

It is almost certain that the other ancillary building were provided to the rear of the premises some of which were probably encompassed as part of the present structure. It may also be possible that some link was also made with the buildings 29 & 31 Middle St to the rear of the current site however no evidence remains of these premises they being demolished sometime after WW2 and before the construction of the Library in the 1970's thus leaving the rear of the Hotel exposed to view from the adjacent car-park.

The most dramatic change in the development of the hotel came in the late 1800's where a large 3 storey extension was added to the south side providing additional bar space at ground floor level and purpose hotel rooms at first and second floor level. This extension utilised higher floor to floor levels than the original structure and therefore required an additional out-shot from the original staircase in order to form the link between the two phases. This out-shot again included sanitary fittings.

Apart from two known internal refurbishments the covering of the yards to the adjacent outbuildings and provision of a spiral fire escape the building remains very much in this condition. However due to years of neglect under previous ownership the fabric of the buildings has deteriorated and is now currently subject to major external overhaul however certain areas such as the former outbuildings and the later stair out-shot are becoming life expired.

At present the ground floor and basement form the retail bar, restaurant and ancillary facilities and the upper floors remain virtually as when property ceased functioning as a hotel with the exception of one room and adjoining passage and facilities that are an office and welfare facilities for staff of the retail premises below.
