5 George Street Griffin Street Deal
The Deal History Society give the dates of this pub from between 1699 and 1851, but no address, however, at one time between those dates it was called the "Three Roebucks." Further research shows Griffin Street mentioned, which is just off George Street, and the year 1804, so I would suggest it changed names to the "Sun" before 1804, if indeed at all. If Melvilles directory of 1858 has the correct name and address I have traced another "Sun Inn" in Brewer Street, a few streets away and trading at the same time. http://home.freeuk.net/eastkent/deal/pubs.htm I have confirmation that it was definitely trading as the "Sun Inn" between 1874 and 1891, if indeed this is the same public house.
There is also mention of a "Rising Sun" also in the same street, so I am assuming these two are one and the same. Further information states:- Pigots 1824 "Rising Sun" Griffin Street, John White. DLR 1828 Mary White DLR 1869 not licensed DLR 1872 license renewed Kellys 1878 5 George Street DLR 1903 George Street 1908 not licensed
