White Lion 2012

Above Google image, August 2012.

Built as a farmhouse in 1565 the premises became a public house in 1689.

I believe it was closed and turned into a private residence some time after 1974.

Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.

From an email received 16 November 2018.

My father was landlord for Fremlins brewery 1954-1957 Maidstone museum has photographs going back to the mid 1800' showing the name as the "White Lion."

It was built in the 1500's but as two dwellings. A butchers shop and an ale shop, bring your own bottle to the small hatch in one door and it would be refilled.

There was a secret room in the attic now converted into a bedroom.

There was also a very old Walnut tree in the back garden which shaded the beer cellar which was above ground. Long cut down for its timber.

Been completely ruined inside, everything painted white and a copy of a Victorian staircase replaced the original.

Terrible desecration of our history!

Roger Miles.
