Greyhound plaque

Above plaque saying the following:- "THE GREYHOUND." This building is the second "Greyhound" public house on this site. Its predecessor was a three-story Georgian-style property, built around 1797. The "Greyhound" stands on the High Street section once occupied by the Grete (or Great) House. It was first recorded in 1532, when owned by the London brewer Thomas Knight, and it was not demolished until 1868.

These premises were refurbished by J D Wetherspoon in June 2011.

Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser, 03 September 1870.

Annual licensing day.

On application being made by Mr. J. Sanders, of the "Greyhound Inn," High Street, inspector Howe said he had a complaint to make. Resistance on one occasion was made to the police going into the house. Mr. Sanders said this was the first time he had heard of such a complaint. The Inspector had never mentioned such a circumstance as having occurred to him. The Bench said if there were any complaints another year the licence would not be renewed.

The pub having closed in 2006 was bought by Wetherspoon's and in April they started to renovate the building using the upper stories as flats. It reopened again in August 2011.
