86 High Street Chatham
The Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre has referenced a set of documents, that I haven't seen yet, and is part of the Watts Charity MSS, 1579-1972. Reference is made as follows:- 1780-1795 T12. Premises in Chatham and Rochester [Including the "King's
Head," "King's Arms,"
"Hit and Miss" and "Dover
Castle;" 3 messuages in Whittle Alley, High Street, and 9 messuages in
Deal Yard, High street; and several messuages in Globe Lane and Holborn
Lane, all in Chatham; 4 messuages in Love Lane, St. Margaret's Rochester]
(26 docs.)
1850-1864 T31. The "Hit or Miss," otherwise called the "Rose," adjoining fishmongers shop, and several messuages behind it, High Street (3 docs.) It seems to me the premises must have either changed name or had two names between 1850 and 1864, although I do have reference to a "Rose" in 1839.
Pigot's Directory of 1828 and 1832 gave this the name "Hit or Miss."
