South Eastern Gazette, 4 September, 1860.

Wednesday. (Before the Rev. G. Davies, Captain Savage, and T. H. Day and J. Hulkes, Esqrs.)

James Shrubb, keeper of the "Good Intent" beerhouse, Westcourt-street, Brompton, was charged with having his house open for the sale of beer at improper hours on Sunday. On a constable visiting the house to ascertain whether there were any parties there, ne found five men in the skittle-ground with beer before them.

The Rev. G. Davies said he would not read the defendant a lecture on morality, but his conduct was very abominable. If the law were not strictly enforced in that neighbourhood, with 50,000 inhabitants, they would have at least 1,200 "ragamuffins" who would be getting drunk every Sunday. To mark his sense of defendant’s conduct he should fine him 20s. and 9s. costs, and if he appeared there again, he (the rev. magistrate) would inflict the full penalty imposed by the law.

Probably named after the ship ‘Good Intent'. It was closed by the West Kent Compensation Authority in 1916 when it was owned by Truman Hanbury & Co.; Charles Whiffen, the licensee, had been there for 21 years.

This pub is one in the list of my "Project 2014."

As such I have found a picture of the pub, but to date have no other information. Local knowledge, further pictures, and licensee information would be appreciated.

I will be adding the historical information when I find or are sent it, but this project is a very big one, and I do not know when or where the information will come from.

All emails are answered.
