The original building was erected in the reign of William the Conqueror (1028-1087) and was an old chapel. However, the building was rebuilt during Henry VIII's reign (1491-1547) and was a beer-house called the "Cock and Coney." The name changed some time between 1815 and 1818 to the "Wellington" and later to the "Duke of Wellington." The Duke gained his title in 1815.
