Erith Marshes (Picardy 1861Census)

Erith

Not a lot known about this pub at present, other than it was addressed as in Picardy from the 1861 census, which is on the Erith marshes.

I am also informed by Jim Packer author of the "Lost Pubs of Bexley" that Tithe plot 5 was sometimes called the Marsh House or Halfway House.

Further research from the census of 1881 gives the licensee as Thomas L Emms, which is the same as for the "Chequers" addressed as Belvedere. So I am saying that this could well be, one and the same pub. However, Jim Packer says details of this pub and the "Crooked Billett" on Picardy Hill are still to be resolved.

DARTFORD AND THE VALE OF DARENTH.

NEW APPLICATION FOR LICENSE.

Edmund Barber, landlord of the "Crooked Billet" beershop, Picardy, in the parish of Erith, made application for a spirit license.

Mr. Gibson attended on behalf of applicant.

The grounds of this application went to show that the house was situated on the public road leading from Greenwich, Woolwich, and Plumstead, to Erith, and was distant nearly half-a-mile from any other licensed house; that some years ago a licensed house, then known by the sign of the "Crooked Billet," stood near the spot, but had since been pulled down; that the licensed house on Erith Marshes, called the "Chequers," has lately been taken possession of by the officers of her Majesty's War Department for public purposes; and that, therefore, the house, if licensed, would be a great accommodation to the locality.

The Bench granted the application.
