Only reference for this pub I have found so far is from the census of
1901. I also have another "George"
listed as being in Ightham.
In a report regarding the probate of Henry Howe in 1899 the premises was
referred to as the "Royal George" beerhouse, Crouch, Wrotham.

Hello,
When I was a child I knew the people who lived in one of the other
cottages in the row that had held The George. (Batts Cottages).
I was always told that the pub was the top cottage, not the lowest
one as in your map.
The entire row was demolished in about 1980 after having been
condemned as unfit for habitation about twenty years before. They
were tiny two up two down with a single cold tap in the kitchen and
not much else.
The terrace of four cottages was replaced by two pairs of semi
detached houses.
Hope this helps,
Alison Milton.

From an email received 11 September 2021. Please find a picture of
my car parked outside of No.1, Batts Cottages or George Row
dependant on whom you spoke to. I lived there with my mum and gran
in the mid sixties and the Ex landlord of the "Star
and Garter" lived next door in No 2.
We had a cellar and a flap on the outside, leaked of course. And
they were al demolished sometime in the early eighties I believe.
Oh that’s me next to the car.
Cheers,
Colin McCrae. |
