30 The Street Wittersham
The 16th century building has been granted a Grade II listing. The "Old Inn" is steeped in history, once the home of Lawrence Alma-Tadeama close friend of Ellen Terry who first introduced Alma to Wittersham in 1905. Sir John Key who was Lord Mayor of London three times resided at the "Old Inn" during the 19th century. The building overlooks the 13th century church of St. John the Baptist which now has a peal of eight bells.
I am informed by Peter Checksfield that there until recently, used to be a Bed and Breakfast operating in Wittersham, that stood opposite the "Queen's Head" under the name of the "Old Inn Bed and Breakfast." I am assuming that thus used to be a public house, but to date the above is all the information I know. Peter also suggests that this may well have been the original site of the "Ewe and Lamb" pre 1870.
