Lower Street changed name to High Street just before 1900, hence the two
addresses.
A J Langridge's research in 1977 mentions the pub was adjacent to the
Town Hall and at the time of research says it was closed.
In 1872 the pub was owned and supplied by Hills & Son, but by 1903
Thomson & Son had taken over.
From the East Kent Mercury, circa 2000. by Rowan
Horncastle.
Signs of "Black Bull" pub can still be seen.
A picture of the "Black Bull" public house in the early 1960s on Deal
High Street is the subject for this week's Then and Now column.
Deal Licensing Register shows that H. White privately owned the pub
in 1828 and T. Jelly was the owner in 1850. These two people acted as
private landlords.
Hills and Son, the pale ale and porter brewers, became owners of the
Black Bull in 1872. Ownership changed again 31 years later when it was
given to Thompson and Sons. The owners of the "Black Bull" pictured in
the 1960s were east London brewers Charringtons.
The pub has now been replaced by Peppers, a health food shop that
opened in 1979. With Peppers you can still see some of the original pub
features, such as the shelving and light fittings, and the original sign
of the "Black Bull" is at the back of the shop.
The shops alongside the old "Black Bull" include a Christian
bookshop, hairdressers, greengrocers, sweet shop and Japp's tobacconist.
These businesses do not exist any more and have been replaced by an
ornament shop and a different hairdresser.
