From the Southeastern Gazette, 3 July 1866.

Beer-house Offence.

At the City Petty Sessions, on Thursday, Richard Faulkner, landlord of the “Globe” beerhouse, in Castle-street, was summonded for keeping his house open during prohibited hours on the preceding Sunday Inspector Andrews stated that at 9.40 on Sunday morning he saw a man come out of the defendant’s house, which induced him to enter it. On his doing so he found three men standing in front of the bar, with jugs and glasses containing malt liquor before them. He directed the landlord’s attention to the matter, and informed him that he would be reported for keeping his house open during prohibited hours on the Sabbath. The defence was that the landlord supplied the beer believing the applicants were travellers, as they came into his house and inquired when a train went to Dover. No witnesses were, however, called in support of this statement. A fine of 2s. 6d. only, costs 6s. 6d. was inflicted, in consequence of the previous good conduct of the house.
