Satisfactory Licensing Report.
AN APPLICATION REFUSED.
The annual licensing meeting of the St Augustine's Division was held at the
Sessions House, Longport Street, Canterbury, on Wednesday. All licences
except those of the "Red Lion," Sturry; "Sportsman," Seasalter; "Plough," Harbledown, "Wheatsheaf," Swalecliffe, "Long Reach," Whitstable; and No.
133, Mortimer Street, Herne Bay (which were adjourned) were renewed.
Presenting his annual report, Superintendent G. T. Hall said all houses in
the Division had been well conducted. There were 101 ale-houses, 24 beer-on,
8 beer-off and 14 beer, wine and spirits-off. With a population of 40,570
this gave a ratio of 275.9 persons per house. Six licences had been
transferred during the year and two persons had been proceeded against for,
drunkenness.
The table of drunkenness from 1940 was: 1940 (1); 1941 (0); 1942 (1); 1943
(0); and 1944 (2).
The Chairman (Commander R.H. R Mackaw) commented that it was a very
satisfactory report.
