71 (44) High Street Ramsgate
The "Freemason's Tavern" was built in 1810 and rebuilt in 1908, butchers were regular customers at lunchtime, as several were employed at an abattoir behind the pub. The new house was designed as a quarter-circle, which allowed room for an alleyway up the side of the building to give access from the High Street to Church Road. This led right past the abattoir, and consequently the passage is still known as Pig Alley. The old leaded-light windows of the tavern still advertise George Beer's Canterbury Ales & Stouts. In 1869-70 the pub was part of a consortium who were advertising their goods of selling tea in response to grocers' selling beer and wine. (Click for further details.) Changed name to the "Emerald Bar" then Jeykll and Hyde" and now (2014) I believe "Macies."
