Rough Common Harbledown
The map above shows the position of the "Magpie" to be right opposite the "Dog and Bear" and as the above photos show these are probably on the site of if not the original building, however the bungalow next to them also has a claim and is called Magpie Lodge. This one traded from 1838 to its closure in 1882. In 1874 the pub was severely damaged by fire and though it continued trading, in 1875 the licensee (George Maple) crossed the road to run the "Dog and Bear."
