Man of Kent 1926

Above photo, circa 1926, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. When this photograph was taken, the pub was evidently trading as free house, which was unusual in those days, when nearly all pubs were tied to breweries. Milk Stout, which is brewed with Lactose, a non-fermentable sugar, became hugely popular after WW1, as drinkers seemed to prefer the sweeter flavour, compared to traditional dry stouts. Mackeson's didn't invent Milk Stout but their brand dominated the UK market, to the point where, in 1920, they were bought out by H & G Simonds' Reading brewery, which wanted to capitalise on the change in drinkers' preferences.
