Above photograph, circa 1906. Showing the pub in the livery of Gardner's
Ash Brewery. The pub was one of three Gardner's tied houses in
Canterbury, the other two being the "Bridge
House Tavern" (now the "Phoenix")
and the "Guildhall Hotel"
(which became Hepworth's tailors, then part of Lefevre's department
store, succeeded by Debenham's and is now, in early 2025, sitting
derelict, forlorn and partly burned out.) Exactly what type of event was
taking place at this isn't currently known but it was most likely some
kind of day trip, or excursion, for the pub's regulars. Kindly sent by

Traced from between 1858 and 1938 at present, but looking at the fact
that it appears the hanging sign brackets are still on the building, I would
suggest it was still a pub until recently.
Latest information received December 2015 says the building is now being
used as a funeral parlour, but in 2002 was Hinges and Brackets, hardware
store.

Another Suicide.
Shortly after two o’clock on Monday, Edward Charrison, landlord of
the "Woodman’s Arms" public-house, Wincheap-street, near this city,
committed suicide, while suffering under an attack of delirium
tremens, brought on by excessive drinking. The same evening an
inquest was held on the body, by Mr. Delasaux, coroner, when the
following evidence was adduced:—
Hannah Lilley, a lodger in the house, deposed to hearing, at about
half-past two in the afternoon, something fall heavily in the
bed-room over the tap room, succeeded by groaning from deceased; and
having obtained assistance, the room was entered, when deceased was
found in a pool of blood, with a razor by his side. Life was not
extinct, though it was so before medical assistance could be
obtained. Deceased led a drunken life, and was occasionally very
violent, his violence as often being succeeded by melancholy or
lowness of spirits. The jury, thereupon, returned a verdict that the
deceased "destroyed himself while in a state of insanity."
