Applications for New Licenses.
Mr. Monckton then applied on behalf of Mr. Sutton, of the
"Holly-bush Inn," Thornhills, for a spirit license. This house is
situated directly opposite to the "Brickmakers’ Arms," to which house
a license was last year granted. With respect to this application,
Mr. Monckton, in urging its superior claims to those of the "Brickmakers’
Arms," remarked upon the way in which the licence to the latter had
been granted by the Bench, which elicited some alteration, and
strong protestations against the "licence" assumed by advocate, in
pleading for their clients.

From the Kentish Gazette, 25 April 1865.
Shocking Death in a Cellar.
Yesterday evening week an inquest was held at the "Hollybush
Inn," Perryfields, before H. Hughes, Esq., deputy coroner, upon the
body of Edward Avery, 68, a carpenter, who was found dead in the
cellar of his dwelling house.
It appears that some three or four years ago the deceased came
into possession of property, and since that his habits have not been
of the most temperate character.
On Saturday evening week Mrs. Avery went out shopping, and on her
return she waited for her husband, who was usually very punctual in
getting home about nine o’clock. Finding he did not return she went
upstairs and afterwards proceeded to one or two places in search of
him. She subsequently went down into the cellar, where she found the
unfortunate man lying with his head doubled under him as if he had
fallen down some of the steps. He was quite dead. Deceased had a
knife in his hand, and it is supposed he was going to get a candle
from a shelf part of the way down the steps. The body was turned
over on its back and laid down upon a shutter, where it remained
until seen by the jury. He was found dead on the Saturday night, but
the police were not informed of the circumstance until a late hour
on Sunday afternoon.
The medical evidence went to show hat death was caused by
apoplexy. There were no marts of violence upon the body, nor were
there any bones broken. The jury returned a verdict in accordance
with the medical testimony.
