Star 1926

Above photo, 1926, kindly supplied by Rory Kehoe who says:- This photo was taken quite soon after the "Star," originally a Rigden's house, received it's George Beer & Rigden livery paint job, following 1922 merger of the companies. The notes say that the original pub (the "Chequer") dates from c.1600 and was re-named the "Gun" about 100 years later. It was still the "Gun" when, in 1785, John Rigden purchased the pub from Charlotte Come for £260 making it one of Rigden's earliest tied houses. It's not clear exactly when, or why, the name was changed from the "Gun" to the "Star." The posters to the right of the "Star" are advertising divers amusements, including flying chair-o-planes, a carousel, a circus and a grand violin orchestra-phone! I'd love to know what that might have looked/sounded like!

Star plaque

The "Star Inn" closed on 5 October 1984, displayed an unusual sign in its latter days as a Whitbread Fremlin house. The scene depicted an astronaut on the moon, gazing at a distant bright star. The pub was one of the oldest in Faversham, dating from the late sixteenth century, and was known successively as the "Chequer" and "Gun Inn;" the Star was probably adopted in the early 1800s.
