Portland Vase pram race

Above photo, date unknown. Looks like the pram race that also passed the "Rifleman."

Six gallant teams took part in an annual pram race which supports different charity each year.

This year the elderly will benefit, and hampers will be donated at Christmas courtesy of regulars at seven Chatham pubs who all entered into the spirit of the event.

It was organised by the "Portland Vase" pub in Cromwell Terrace and after a fast downhill start the four man teams took in the "Chatham Chest, the "Jolly Caulkers," "Victoria's," the "Little Crown," the "Clarendon" and finally the "Magpie Hall Tavern." Team members had to drink a half pint of beer at every hostelry.

Winners by a long shot in a time of 14 minutes were Lee Roberta, Warren Coppin, Danny Cooper and Andy Collings from the "Magpie Hall Tavern."

Two minutes behind them were a tram from the "Portland Vase." They were landlord Derek Rudd's sons Mark and Michael, Phil Stone and Luke Ward.

Credit must no to Bill Row of Lester Road, Chatham, who at 60, was the oldest pram racer.

The winners received a shield and a gallon bottle of whisky which was later raffled to help swell the fund raising coffers. It is hoped the total amount raised from this fifth event will be about £600.

The teams are pictured at the starting line at the "Portland Vase."

The Licensing Records of 1872 stated the pub held a Full License and was owned by Charles Withecom of Fair Row, Chatham.

Not sure why or when, but the pub by 2008 is apparently called the "Portland Vase".
